EPC Warning Light On? Mobile Inspection At Your Door

EPC stands for Electronic Power Control, and on a VW group car it means the engine management has limited what the throttle is allowed to do.

It is a symptom rather than a fault. The light is the car protecting itself, and what triggered it sits somewhere in the throttle, pedal, brake switch or sensor chain.

The price depends on your car, never on which fault it turns out to be.

The throttle body is not always the culprit

EPC is the most commonly over-repaired light on VW group cars, because the throttle body is the obvious suspect and the expensive one. A failed brake light switch sets the same light for a fraction of that. Our prices for the three usual candidates:

Throttle body replacementR952 to R980
Ignition coil replacementR952 to R1,102
Finding out which one it actually isR952 to R1,104

What else is the car doing?

EPC rarely arrives alone, and what comes with it points straight at the cause.

EPC on and the car is in limp mode

Throttle authority has been withdrawn. Usually the throttle body, the pedal sensor, or the wiring between them. Drive it as little as possible. More on this.

EPC with the cruise control dead and brake lights not working

Classic brake light switch. One cheap part sets all three symptoms, and it is the single most misdiagnosed cause of an EPC light.

EPC and the engine light together, rough running

A misfire or a coil fault has tripped the protection. The EPC light here is a consequence, not the problem. More on this.

EPC comes on only sometimes, then clears

An intermittent connection or a sensor drifting out of range. These need live data while the car runs, not a code read while it idles. More on this.

Describe my problem

What people say after we have been out

Real jobs, real faults, at homes and offices.

What we do on site

✓

Full VW group module scanEngine, gearbox, ABS and body modules all read, because EPC is frequently triggered by a fault stored somewhere other than the engine.
✓

Throttle and pedal position compared liveWhat the pedal is asking for against what the throttle is doing. A mismatch names the failed sensor directly rather than by elimination.
✓

Brake light switch testedCheap, common, and responsible for a large share of EPC lights. It gets ruled in or out early rather than last.
✓

Adaptation and basic settings where neededSome throttle faults clear properly only after a relearn. Done correctly, this avoids a part being replaced for nothing.

The kit that comes with the mechanic

A mobile mechanic is only as good as what is in the van.

Autel and Launch scan tools

Full VW group module coverage, including the body and gateway modules where EPC triggers are often stored.

Live throttle and pedal data

What the pedal asks for against what the throttle delivers, compared in real time, which names the failed sensor outright.

Multimeter, on the brake light switch circuit

The cheapest common cause gets measured early rather than being the last thing anyone checks.

Smoke machine

An unmetered air leak upsets the same throttle calculations, so it is ruled out before a throttle body is condemned.

Limp mode is the car protecting itself

If the EPC light has brought reduced power with it, the engine management has decided full throttle is not safe. Driving it hard in that state risks the very damage the limit is there to prevent.

What you get for the money

A named fault, in writing, and a price to fix it

What has failed, why, and what the repair involves. If the repair is ours you get the quote before anything is touched, and the inspection is not charged twice.

Questions we get asked

What does EPC actually mean?

Electronic Power Control. It is the VW group warning that the engine management has found a fault in the throttle control chain and has limited what the throttle can do. It names the system, not the broken part.

Which cars get the EPC light?

Volkswagen, Audi, Seat and Skoda mainly, because it is a VW group warning. Other makes show the same kind of fault under a different name, usually a throttle or reduced power warning.

Is it safe to drive?

Gently and briefly, to somewhere safe. If the power has dropped noticeably, the car has already limited itself and should not be pushed. We come to you, which means you do not have to drive it anywhere at all.

What does the inspection cost?

R952 to R1,104 depending on the car, labour only, with no parts in that figure. The repair is quoted separately and you approve it before anything is touched.
