Drivetrain Malfunction? Mobile Inspection At Your Door

Drivetrain Malfunction is BMW’s way of saying something is wrong enough that I have reduced power to protect myself. It names no part at all.

On most BMW and MINI engines it is a misfire, a boost fault or a fuel delivery problem. Which of those it is changes the repair completely.

Replacing all the coils is the shotgun approach

A drivetrain malfunction on a turbo BMW is commonly met by replacing every ignition coil on the assumption it is a misfire. Sometimes that is right. When the real cause is boost or injection, it is an expensive way of finding out:

What happened when the message appeared?

The circumstances separate a misfire from a boost fault faster than any code does.

It appeared under hard acceleration, with a sudden loss of power

Typically boost. A split charge pipe, a wastegate fault or a turbo problem, and the car cut power the moment the pressure went wrong.

Rough running, shaking, and the engine light flashing too

An active misfire. Flashing means unburnt fuel is reaching the catalytic converter, so this is the version worth stopping for. More on this.

It comes on cold, then clears once warm

Often injection or a sensor reading out of range while cold. Live data during warm up is what catches this one.

Power is down but the car runs smoothly

Limp mode without a misfire. Usually boost, a throttle fault or a sensor the management no longer trusts. More on this.

What we do on site

✓

Full BMW module scan with freeze frameThe conditions at the moment of the fault, which is what separates a boost event from a misfire without guessing.
✓

Misfire counters read per cylinderWhich cylinder, and how often. This replaces coils on evidence rather than replacing all of them on principle.
✓

Boost pressure, actual against requestedMeasured live. A split charge pipe or a wastegate fault shows up in seconds and looks nothing like a misfire.
✓

Fuel delivery checked where indicatedRail pressure and injector behaviour, so an injection fault is not treated as an ignition one.

The kit that comes with the mechanic

A mobile mechanic is only as good as what is in the van.

Autel and Launch scan tools

Full BMW and MINI module coverage with freeze frame and live data, including per cylinder misfire counters.

Boost pressure measured live

Actual against requested, which separates a turbo or charge pipe fault from an ignition problem in minutes.

Smoke machine

Pressurised smoke finds a split charge pipe or a boost leak directly, rather than inferring it from a pressure shortfall.

Compression tester

Used where the misfire data points at something mechanical rather than at a coil or an injector.

A flashing engine light alongside it means stop

Flashing means raw fuel is going into the exhaust and the catalytic converter is being damaged right now. Pull over, switch off, and let us come to the car.

What you get for the money

A named fault, in writing, and a price to fix it

What has failed, why, and what the repair involves. If the repair is ours you get the quote before anything is touched, and the inspection is not charged twice.

Questions we get asked

Which cars show Drivetrain Malfunction?

Mainly BMW and MINI. It is their wording for a protective power reduction. Other makes do the same thing and call it reduced power or limp mode.

Can I drive it like this?

Only far enough to get somewhere safe, and gently. The car has already cut power because it decided full power was not safe. Since we come to you, there is usually no need to drive it anywhere.

Is it always ignition coils?

No, and that assumption is what makes this fault expensive. Coils are a common cause but boost leaks, wastegate faults and injection problems set the same message. Live data tells them apart in minutes.

What does the inspection cost?

R952 to R1,104 depending on the car, labour only, with no parts in that figure. The repair is quoted separately and you see it before anything is touched.
