Skim or Replace Your Discs?

New pads do not always mean new discs. Once the old pads are off, your mechanic measures them. If there is enough thickness left and they are not warped or cracked, disc skimming restores a smooth surface for the new pads and usually costs less than replacing them. Too worn? We tell you straight and fit new discs and pads.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does brake pad replacement cost?
It depends on your car. Across the cars we have priced, parts and labour typically come to between R893 and R1 794. As a guide, a VW Polo starts at R1 175, a Toyota Hilux at R1 332 and a Nissan Almera at R1 233. You get an exact price for your car before any work starts. See also our pricing guide.
How do I know my brake pads need replacing?
Common signs are squealing or grinding when you brake, a longer stopping distance, a pulsing or soft brake pedal, the car pulling to one side, or a brake warning light. If you notice any of these, book as soon as you can.
Do I need new discs with my new pads?
Not always. Your mechanic measures the discs when the old pads come off. If they are still thick enough and in good condition they can be skimmed or kept, and if they are worn below the minimum thickness or damaged they are replaced with new discs and pads.
What is disc skimming and does it save money?
Skimming machines the surface of a disc smooth again so new pads bed in properly. When your discs have enough thickness left, it is usually cheaper than buying new discs. We offer it, and we will tell you honestly if your discs need replacing instead.
How long does a brake pad change take?
Most pad replacements take roughly an hour of labour. Fitting pads and discs together takes a little longer. Your mechanic works at your home or office, so there is no workshop queue. See the areas we serve.
Is it safe to keep driving on worn brake pads?
We do not recommend it. Worn pads lengthen your stopping distance and can damage the discs, which makes the repair more expensive. Book as soon as you notice the warning signs, or browse all brake services.
Can I fix my brakes now and pay later?
Yes. You can fix your car now and pay later with ZeroPay, HappyPay or PayFlex, with interest-free payments, approved in minutes. Choose your payment option when you book.
