Dashboard Warning Lights? Mobile Inspection At Your Door

A warning light tells you which system is unhappy. It does not tell you what broke, which is why reading the code is not the same as finding the fault.

Colour matters more than most people realise. Red means stop now. Amber means find out soon. Getting that distinction wrong, in either direction, is expensive.

Any diagnostic inspection, any car. Labour only, no parts.

The price depends on your car, never on which fault it turns out to be.

The part named in the code is often not the part that failed

A code points at the circuit reporting a problem, not always at the component that caused it. Replacing the named sensor on a guess is the most common way people spend money without fixing anything. Our prices for three commonly guessed parts:

Ignition coil replacementR952 to R1,102
Throttle body replacementR952 to R980
Finding out which one it actually isR952 to R1,104

What colour is it, and is it steady?

These two things decide whether you drive it or stop, before anyone reads a code.

Red, and it came on while you were driving

Oil pressure, temperature, brakes or charging. Stop safely and switch off. Red is the range where carrying on turns a repair into a replacement.

Amber and steady

Something has failed but the car has adapted around it. Drive gently and get it read soon, before that adaptation hides the original cause.

Amber and flashing

Usually an active misfire. Flashing means raw fuel is reaching the catalytic converter, and that is an expensive part worth protecting. More on this.

It comes on, clears itself, then comes back

Intermittent, and the hardest kind to catch. Live data while the car runs is what finds these, not a code read at the kerb. More on this.

Not sure which one yours is?

Tell us what the car is doing, in your own words. A mechanic reads it and calls you back within the hour. You do not need to know what is wrong, that is what we are for.

Describe my problem

What people say after we have been out

Real jobs, real faults, at homes and offices.

What we do on site

✓

Every module read, not just the engineABS, airbag, gearbox, body and comfort modules all store faults. A cheap reader sees the engine only, which is why so many lights come back.
✓

Freeze frame and live dataThe conditions the fault occurred under, and what the sensors are doing now. This separates a failed part from one reporting someone else’s problem.
✓

Pending codes checkedFaults not yet mature enough to light the lamp. This is what is developing next, and catching it now is the cheap version.
✓

The circuit tested, not assumedPower, earth and signal measured at the component before anything is condemned.

The kit that comes with the mechanic

A mobile mechanic is only as good as what is in the van.

Autel and Launch scan tools

Full module coverage with live data and freeze frame, not the code number a cheap reader gives you.

Pending code check

Faults not yet mature enough to light the lamp, which is what is developing next.

Multimeter, on the circuit itself

Power, earth and signal measured at the component, so a wiring fault is not misdiagnosed as a failed part.

Smoke machine

Lean running and air mass codes are very often an unmetered air leak. Smoke testing finds the split hose or perished gasket causing it.

A red light means stop, not slow down

Oil pressure, temperature and charging lights in red give you minutes, not kilometres. Pull over safely, switch off, and call us. We come to the car.

What you get for the money

A named fault, in writing, and a price to fix it

What has failed, why, and what the repair involves. If the repair is ours you get the quote before anything is touched, and the inspection is not charged twice.

Questions we get asked

Can I keep driving with the light on?

It depends entirely on the colour. Amber and steady, usually yes, gently, and get it read soon. Red, no. Stop safely and switch off, because red lights are the ones where carrying on is what causes the damage.

Can you not just clear it?

We can, but clearing a light without fixing the cause only hides it until the fault repeats. It also wipes the freeze frame data that would have told us what happened, which makes the next diagnosis slower and more expensive.

My mechanic read the code and replaced the part, but the light came back.

That happens often. The code names the circuit reporting a problem, not always the part that caused it. A lean running code, for example, is very often an air leak rather than the sensor that reported it.

What does the inspection cost?

R952 to R1,104 depending on the car, labour only, with no parts in that figure. Any repair that follows is quoted separately and you see it before anything is touched.
