A code reader gives you a number. A proper scan gives you every module, live data, and someone who can tell you what it means.
This is the full read, not the free one at a parts counter. Engine, gearbox, ABS, airbag, body and comfort modules, with stored and pending faults.

The price depends on your car, never on which fault it turns out to be.
A code number is not a diagnosis
The cheap reader at the parts shop sees the engine module and nothing else, and it gives you a code without the data behind it. Acting on that number alone is how people buy parts they did not need. Three commonly bought on a code:
When a full scan is the right call
Four situations where reading every module saves more than it costs.
The scan tells you which system, how serious, and what the repair is likely to involve, before you commit to anything. More on this.
Pending and history codes survive a reset in most modules. What was wiped is often still readable.
Many faults log quietly long before they light a lamp. A scan finds what is developing while it is still cheap.
A full scan on a car you do not own yet is the best money in this list. More on this.
Not sure which one yours is?
Tell us what the car is doing, in your own words. A mechanic reads it and calls you back within the hour. You do not need to know what is wrong, that is what we are for.

What the scan actually covers
The kit that comes with the mechanic
A mobile mechanic is only as good as what is in the van.
Dealer level coverage across every module, which is what a counter reader cannot do.
Fuel trims, airflow, pressures and temperatures while the engine runs, plus the conditions at the moment each fault was recorded.
Faults not yet mature enough to light the lamp, which is what is developing next.
Where the codes point at unmetered air, the leak is found rather than inferred from the sensor that reported it.
A reset makes the light go away and wipes the data that explained it. If the fault is real it returns, and the second diagnosis is harder because the evidence is gone.
What you get for the money
What has failed, why, and what the repair involves. If the repair is ours you get the quote before anything is touched, and the inspection is not charged twice.

Questions we get asked
How is this different from the free scan at a parts shop?
A counter reader sees the engine module and returns a code number. This reads every module in the car, with live data, freeze frame and pending codes, and you get a mechanic explaining what it means rather than a printout.
Can you scan it at my house?
That is how we work. We come to your home or office, plug in, run the scan and go through it with you there and then.
Will the scan tell me exactly what part to replace?
Often it points directly at the component. Sometimes it names a circuit and the live data narrows it further, which is why a scan with a mechanic beats a code on its own. Where it needs more testing, we tell you that rather than guessing.
What does the scan cost?
R952 to R1,104 depending on the car, labour only. If a repair follows and it is ours, it is quoted separately and you see the price before anything is touched.
