Pre-Purchase Car Inspection, Before You Pay

Buying a used car is the one purchase where the seller knows more than you do. An inspection closes that gap before the money moves.

We come to the car, wherever it is standing. Dealer forecourt, a private seller’s driveway, or a yard on the other side of town.

Labour only, no parts. The price depends on your car.

This one is priced on its own because it takes longer than a standard diagnostic inspection.

What a test drive around the block will not show you

Twenty minutes in traffic will not reveal a clutch at the end of its life, a turbo beginning to show shaft play, or a service history that was stamped but never done. These are our own prices for three things buyers routinely inherit:

Major serviceR2,466 to R4,689
Clutch kit replacementR5,863 to R14,170
Finding out which one it actually isR1,725 to R2,041

When an inspection pays for itself

Four situations where the gap between asking price and real value is widest.

The seller will not let you take it to a workshop

Then the workshop comes to the car. A seller who objects to an independent inspection is telling you something, and it is worth hearing before you pay.

Service history is thin, missing, or all from one back street place

Stamps are easy to get. What the car actually shows, wear, leaks, fluid condition and stored fault codes, is much harder to fake.

It is a German car out of warranty

The gap between a well kept one and a neglected one is enormous, and almost none of it is visible from the driver’s seat.

The price feels too good

Usually because something expensive is due. Finding out which something, and what it costs, turns a gamble into a negotiation.

Not sure which one yours is?

Tell us what the car is doing, in your own words. A mechanic reads it and calls you back within the hour. You do not need to know what is wrong, that is what we are for.

Describe my problem

What people say after we have been out

Real jobs, real faults, at homes and offices.

What we check before you commit

✓

Every module scanned, including pending and recently cleared codesNot just what is lit now. Faults wiped shortly before a viewing leave traces, and those traces show up.
✓

Engine, gearbox and underbody, coldLeaks, weeps and seepage read most honestly before a car has been warmed up and wiped down for a buyer.
✓

Brakes, tyres, suspension and steeringMeasured rather than eyeballed, so you know what is due and roughly when.
✓

Road test against what the seller claimsGearbox behaviour, clutch bite, brake feel, vibration and noise, checked against what you were told on the phone.

The kit that comes with the mechanic

A mobile mechanic is only as good as what is in the van.

Autel and Launch scan tools

Every module read, not just the engine. Stored, pending and recently cleared codes all show, which is how a freshly reset dashboard gets caught.

Battery load tester

Tested under the load a starter actually draws, because a battery about to fail still reads twelve volts at rest.

Infrared thermometer

Brake and tyre temperatures after the road test expose a dragging caliper or a binding wheel bearing that a static look would miss.

UV dye and blacklight where needed

Separates an old stain from a leak that is still active, which decides whether a weep is a problem you are inheriting or a repair already done.

Do not pay a deposit first

Once money has changed hands your leverage is gone. Book the inspection while you are still a buyer who can walk away, because that is when the report is worth the most.

What you get for the money

A named fault, in writing, and a price to fix it

What has failed, why, and what the repair involves. If the repair is ours you get the quote before anything is touched, and the inspection is not charged twice.

Questions we get asked

Can you inspect a car at a dealership?

Yes. We come to wherever the car is standing, including a dealer forecourt. Most dealers are used to it. A seller who refuses outright is giving you information.

What do I actually get?

A written report naming what is wrong, what is worn, what is due, and what each item would cost to put right at our prices. You can hand it to the seller and negotiate with it, or walk away from the car.

Will you tell me whether to buy it?

We tell you what the car is, in plain terms, and what it is likely to cost you over the next while. The decision stays yours, but it becomes an informed one.

How long does it take?

Usually around two hours at the car. We work around the seller’s availability rather than asking anyone to bring the car anywhere.
