Squeaking Brakes? Mobile Inspection At Your Door

A squeak can be harmless dust or it can be the wear indicator doing its job. A grind is neither, and it is costing you money by the kilometre.

Brakes are the one system where guessing is not an option, and where measuring takes minutes.

Waiting until it grinds doubles the bill

Pads alone are the cheap repair. Once the friction material is gone and the backing plate is cutting into the disc, the discs go too, and sometimes the caliper with them. These are our prices for each stage of that:

What does the noise sound like?

Squeak, squeal and grind mean three different things and three different urgencies.

A light squeak on the first few stops in the morning

Usually surface rust and dust burning off, and it clears after a stop or two. The most common harmless version of this noise.

A constant high squeal that stops when you brake harder

The wear indicator. It is a small metal tab designed to make exactly this noise when the pads are near their limit. Book it now, while it is still pads only.

A deep grinding noise under braking

Friction material gone and metal on metal. Every stop is cutting into the disc, so the repair gets more expensive the longer it is left.

Squealing plus a pull to one side or a hot wheel

A sticking caliper. The pad is dragging constantly, which wears it out quickly and overheats that corner.

What people say after we have been out

Real jobs, real faults, at homes and offices.

What we do on site

✓

Pad thickness measured, all four cornersAn actual measurement against the manufacturer’s minimum, not an opinion formed through a wheel.
✓

Discs measured for thickness and run outWhether they can be kept decides the size of the job, and that is a measurement rather than a judgement call.
✓

Calipers and slides checked for bindingA sticking caliper eats a new set of pads quickly, so replacing pads without finding it is money wasted.
✓

Fluid condition and leaks checkedOld fluid absorbs water and reduces braking under heat. It gets looked at while everything is apart.

The kit that comes with the mechanic

A mobile mechanic is only as good as what is in the van.

Pad and disc measurement

Thickness and run out measured against the manufacturer’s minimum, so what you are told is a number rather than an opinion.

Infrared thermometer

Corner temperatures after a road test show a dragging caliper, which is why one pad wears out long before the others.

Road test under your conditions

The noise is reproduced at the speed and in the circumstances you describe, before anything is dismantled.

Autel and Launch scan tools

Electronic parking brakes have to be retracted properly, and wear sensors read, rather than forced.

A grinding noise is not something to leave

Metal on metal means the friction material is finished. Stopping distances are already longer, and every further stop damages the disc. This is the one on this page that should not wait.

What you get for the money

A named fault, in writing, and a price to fix it

What has failed, why, and what the repair involves. If the repair is ours you get the quote before anything is touched, and the inspection is not charged twice.

Questions we get asked

My brakes squeak in the morning and then stop. Is that bad?

Usually not. Overnight moisture leaves a light film of surface rust on the discs, and it squeaks until the first few stops clean it off. If it clears after a stop or two and does not return, it is normal.

What is the difference between a squeal and a grind?

A constant high squeal is usually the wear indicator, a metal tab designed to make that noise when the pads are nearly finished. A grind is metal on metal, which means the material is already gone and the discs are being damaged.

Can you do brakes at my house?

Yes. Pads, discs and calipers are routine driveway work, and we carry the parts for common cars. You get the price before anything comes off the vehicle.

What does the inspection cost?

R952 to R1,104 depending on the car, labour only, with no parts in that figure. If the brake work is ours, the repair is quoted separately and you approve it first.
