We identify the noise type, measure pad thickness and inspect the discs for scoring and lipping, check the calipers and slide pins for seizure, inspect the anti-squeal hardware, and report on condition and urgency at all four corners.
Brake noise ranges from harmless to urgent, and the type of noise is the clue. A light squeal in the morning that disappears after a few stops is usually surface rust. A persistent high pitched squeal often means the wear indicator is doing its job. A grinding noise means the friction material is gone and metal is contacting your disc. Michanic inspects brake noise at your home or office.
Brake noise deserves attention because one of its causes is a genuine safety issue. Grinding means the friction material is gone and the backing plate is cutting into the disc, which lengthens stopping distances immediately and destroys the disc quickly, turning a pad replacement into pads and discs. Equally, not all noise means worn brakes: glazing, surface rust and missing hardware all produce squeal with plenty of material remaining. Which is why measuring, rather than assuming either way, is the point of the inspection.
